Metaphor & Oxymoron

METAPHOR:

  • Describing one subject in the way of another to compare the two without the use of ‘like’, ‘than’ or ‘as’. This comparison highlights the traits the two share, even if they are unlike.

  • A metaphor is used to make the object/idea/place you are referencing sounds stronger in the reader’s head.

EXAMPLES:

  • “He was a speeding bullet.”

  • “The world is a stage.”

  • “My life is a movie. Everyone is watching.”

OXYMORON:

  • A figure of speech that directly contrasts contradictory terms; somehow, they make sense.

  • Most commonly, this contradiction is made between two nouns.

EXAMPLES:

  • “The dinner was awfully good”

  • “Living dead”

  • “Deafening silence”
